For more than 200 years, from the day when James Watt’s steam engine was developed, surprising symbiosis of the linkage theory and mathematics is being observed. In the 19th century, the great Russian mathematician Pafnuty Lvovich Chebyshev solved the problem of linkage that converts a rotary motion into and approximate straight line motion. The world’s first stepping machine was invented relying on his theories.

The video shows a precise model animation of the world’s first foot-stepping machine, invented by P.L. Chebyshev. This machine was a hit of the Paris World Fair in 1878.
